This sound recorder and reproducer (phonograph) was invented ca.1920 by Eugen Steiger of Zurich Switzerland. This machine was able to recorder and play back sound off of a specially coated thread. Thousands of yards of thread, with substantially more music recorded on it than a traditional record, could be wound and stored on an ordinary spool. Steiger called it a "talking thread." phonograph which could also be used in place of a dictaphone.
