Sholes & Glidden
Yes, there were writing machines that preceded the Sholes & Glidden, but they were either unmarketable or failed when they did finally go to market. The Sholes & Glidden typewriter, on the other hand, possessed both of those required traits plus tenacity which did make it commercially successful. A major factor attributed to the success of this typewriter was that one could type faster with it than handwrite. The Sholes & Glidded was produced by E. Remington & Sons of Ilion, New York.
