Yes, there were writing machines that preceded the Sholes & Glidden, but they were either unmarketable or failed when they did finally go to market. The Sholes & Glidden typewriter, on the other hand, did succeed commercially. A major factor contributing to its success was the ability of the user could type faster than could handwrite, and legibly to boot! The Sholes & Glidden was produced by E. Remington & Sons of Ilion, New York.
