The Shimer typewriter was first patented on October 27, 1891 by inventor Elmer S. Shimer (patent no.462,019). Later patents for the typewriter were issued to either Elmer, to his brother, Samuel, or to both.

 

Based on the The Shimer No.2's specific model designation, it would be reasonable to infer that a predecessor was also produced. Unfortunately, a No.1 model is not yet known. The successor to the No.2 was simply called "The Shimer," like the example at the bottom of this page.
