The Shimer Typewriter was first patented on October 27, 1891 by inventor Elmer S. Shimer (patent no.462,019). Later patents for the typewriter were issued to either Elmer, his brother Samuel or to both. Based on the The Shimer No.2's specific model designation it is reasonable to infer that there may also have been a predecessor, a Shimer No.1. the successor to the No.2 was simply called The Shimer typewriter.
