The Mill pencil sharpener was invented by John Dix Mills who was awarded a patent for his original design of the sharpener on March 24, 1891. A patent for an improved design was awarded later to him George C. McDermott later the same year. The Mills Pencil Sharpener Company, which was at 118 West Seventh Street in Cincinnati, Ohio, manufactured the device.
