The Lamson pencil sharpener was patented on May 12, 1885. It was manufactured by Joseph Dixon and the J. Dixon Crucible Company of Jersey City, NJ which, according to the label on the sharper, were the sharpener's sole agents. The rear of the sharpener reads "Use Dixon's American Graphite Pencils." It was constructed of cast iron on wood.
